Rough Cut 7 & Breakdown

This is our rough cut 7. I've tried to put in all the effect shots except the environment change smoke part. The color grading for the video I've redo it because after we added the smoke, the colour seems very weird so currently we'll need to adjust it further. 

As for the vfx breakdown, I've also done for my part which is the rotoscoping.

Rough cut 6

We've combined all of our effect shots except one more environment shot, so I rendered out rough cut 6. But we've decided that after all the effect shots had been added in, we'll redo the color correction as the smoke color and feel will change if it's not adjusted correctly. For today, we're also doing our vfx breakdown and after reviewing with our supervisor, we've also made some changes to improve on our vfx.

Rough Cut 4 & Roto WIP

This is rough cut 4 with first color grading but without effect shots inside.

These are some of the screenshots for the walking scene. I've roto every 5 frames and adjusted it accordingly. For this effect shot, it's done for now. However, I'll need to find out how to clean up the edges to make it blend better as the actress hair is quite difficult to roto it cleaner.

Color grading

We've decided to color correct the outdoor scene to make it have those gloomy and sad feel. So I'm referencing from this video with this kind of color correction.

I tried out "Lumetri (Overall Saturation 0.6)" , "Brightness & Contrast" and "Three-Way Color Corrector" on the footage and adjusted it accordingly. 

So this is the current feel of the movie.

For the part where she realised that "Home is more than a space", the environment will change back to a more vibrant color which I'll increase the saturation for that.

As for this scene, this is where the part she realised, so we've planned to put desaturation at the first part then later on when the smoke effect drops down, it will change back to normal with saturated color.

Audio adjusting for our videos

Previously, I've cleaned up the background noises for the video. So, I first edit the audio in adobe audition.

Then, I select the noise part and "Capture noise prints". Next, I went to noise reduction (process) and adjusted the settings accordingly and tested out. 

So now the background noise is reduced.

After that I just saved and go back to premiere pro. I tried not to make the background noise too silent as it will seems very fake without any noises. For the last scene, the volume is actually quite soft so I actually adjusted it in premiere pro "volume" option.

WIP

Today, I helped out with the roto part for one of the effect shot which is when the actress ran out of house and the smoke aura around her. I roto her out every 5 frames and adjusted accordingly.

Nadia has done the camera tracking and add the smoke inside. So she combined it in nuke and I adjusted the roto further. However, I'm still trying to figure out how to smooth the edges of the roto part which is the actress to make it blend in better. 

For tomorrow, my target is to finish the roto part, clean up all the sharp edges. I've also planned to do color grading for our video and I'll be adjusting the bts audio.

Rough cut 3_1

I went to research on how to clear background noise even better and increasing the volume without increasing the background noise.

So I found a tutorial for it.

Did out rough cut 3 with audio adjusted, however I thinks that the last part audio is too soft so I'll go and find out how to solve it.

Edited out the rough cut 2 but I find the part whereby actress walked and camera was in front of her until the part where it's close up on her a bit weird. So I'll try to improvise further and also to clean up the background noise for the audio.

Day 8

Today we went for a reshoot for our outdoor scene as when I done the rough out 1 out, it's too dark. This is how our rough cut 1 will look like:

Thus, this time round we've also planned better before heading to Jein's place. We arrived at about 10am and set up everything before our casts come so that we'll be able to speed things up. The cast arrived at about 2pm and we started to arrange our equipment then we started shooting. So this is the venue which is Jein's house void deck that we used to prepare our stuff.

Next, we've also used green screen as we previously missed out that we need it to key out the actress in order to add some CG object in the environment change scene. 

The whole re-shoot took about 2hours and I'll do out the rough cut 2 and also combining the audio to make it sync.

Day 7

We started on some post production. I did the rough cut 01 of our short film out. However, we discovered that for the outdoor scene shoot, our shots are too dark and so we decided to go for a re-shoot tomorrow. Emily and I took turns to shoot bts for our film, so here's some of the pictures that we took.

Day 6

We arrived at 9am to pick up the camera equipment. Then, Nadia's dad came and fetch us to Jein's house. We've also went to the mrt station to pick up our actor & actress. After that, we went for breakfast before starting the shoot. We set up the equipment, prepare the actor & actress's mood by rehearsing with them. However, we met some problems in setting up the equipment so we took up quite a long time. The shoot began on 2pm. We started shooting the brother and sister scene first. I helped out some part of the behind the scenes and some part of the sound man. Initially, we had problems with the lighting because there are harsh shadows appearing at the walls. We tried to adjust the lights till it's alright. The sun was about to set when we went down to shoot the homeless guy area which is about 6pm. We hurried up and set up the equipment. For this area, when we are shooting the homeless guy scenes, but it's too dark so we used reflectors. The whole shoot ends at about 7:30pm.

Day 5

Today we met some problems in finding the cast and also the location we've recently found is unable to use for shooting. So, initially we went to Mandy and fill up the form to try if we are able to find any cast for the main actress. Jein tried to find cast by making phone calls too. Eventually, we found my friend, Dyyanna to help us to act out as the main actress. After that, we decided to use Jein's house to film too. For today, the whole shoot is set and we're good to go on monday for shooting.

Day 4

For today, we went to the location which we had decided to shoot which is Nadia's house located at Khatib. We started to do test shot at our first scene which is the living room. Jein tried out different types of angles that we could use and so that we can have more choices to choose and edit. After that, we went to the void deck area and look around for the possible place to shoot as the homeless guy place for him to sleep. We found one walkway around the carpark area and it's ideal so we started our second scene. I acted out as the homeless guy in the test shot. After we took finished the test shot, we went back to school and I did the video edit and combined it everything together including the music with other members. So for tomorrow, we'll start to test out the vfx to prepare in advance.

Day 1, Day 2 & Day 3

These two days we are discussing for the ideas on what we are going to do for this project. For this project, our theme is to focus on "Believing . Home" Our whole group agrees that home isn't mainly just a house structure. Home is about what we cherished and where we belong. So focusing on these points, we brainstormed out a few ideas. But we realised that some ideas doesn't focus on the "Home" but on the "family relationship" instead. After that, we went to discuss further and we came out with a final idea. 

So this story is about a spoilt girl who has to move house to a smaller place and she is unhappy with it. When they moved to the smaller place, the girl threw her temper to her parents and out of anger she ran out of the house. After that, she came across this homeless guy under the void deck and she witnessed that the homeless guy setting up his home which is some cardboard and newspapers. The homeless guy started to eat the leftovers food that he found and he was smiling happily, feeling satisfied. The girl then realised that although the homeless guy doesn't have a physical house structure to live in, but he is still satisfied with what he has and that is what home means to him. The girl then started to feel guilty and apologised to her father and they went home happily.

For this story, we came out with three vfx shots. The first one would be the angry aura around the girl when she had quarreled with her parents. The next one would be when she came down to the void deck, the environment changes which happens with the homeless guy inside. The last vfx shot will be when the homeless guy is reading the newspaper, the "Home" quote will appear at the newspaper that he was reading. 

Yesterday, we've done the storyboard out. For today, we've also done the script and we'll be doing the production schedule, leica reel and shot list.
